The working principle of the Komatsu excavator:

Intake stroke

The working substance that enters the cylinder is pure air. As the intake system of diesel engine has less resistance, the inlet end point pressure is pa= (0.85 ~ 0.95) P0, higher than that of gasoline engine. The inlet terminal temperature is Ta=300 to 340K, lower than that of gasoline engine.

Compression stroke

Because the compressed working fluid is pure air, the compression ratio of diesel engine is higher than that of gasoline engine (usually =16 ~ 22). The compression terminal pressure is 3000~5 000kPa, and the compression terminal temperature is 750~1 000K, which is much higher than the diesel spontaneous combustion temperature (about 520K).

When the compression stroke is close to the end, under the action of high pressure oil pump, the diesel oil is injected into the cylinder combustor through the injector with the high pressure of about 10MPa, and it is fired and burned by itself in a short time. The pressure of gas in the cylinder rises rapidly, up to 5000~9 000kPa and the maximum temperature is 1800~2 000K. Because the diesel engine is compressed and self ignited, the diesel engine is a compression ignition engine.

Exhaust stroke

The exhaust of the diesel engine is basically the same as that of the gasoline engine, but the exhaust temperature is lower than that of the gasoline engine. General Tr=700 to 900K. For a single cylinder engine, its speed is uneven, the engine works unsteadily and vibrate greatly. This is because only one stroke in the four strokes is done. The other three strokes are the strokes that consume power and prepare for work. To solve this problem, the flywheel must have a large inertia moment, which will lead to an increase in the quality and size of the whole engine. The use of multi cylinder engine can make up the above deficiencies. Modern cars use four cylinder, six cylinder and eight cylinder engines.
